Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy powerhouse, has signed an agreement with Bapco Energies, the integrated energy company leading the energy transition in the Kingdom of Bahrain, to jointly explore the development and investment in wind projects in the Kingdom with a capacity of up to 2 gigawatts (GW).

Marking a strategic entry into the Bahrain market for the UAE’s clean energy champion, the agreement for near-shore and offshore wind farms is Masdar’s first in the Kingdom and will be the first project of its kind in the region and the Middle East. At up to 2GW, this clean energy collaboration will support the Kingdom of Bahrain to accelerate the decarbonization of critical industrial sectors and open avenues to develop new market sectors. The Kingdom of Bahrain aims to reduce emissions by 30 percent by 2035 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, as outlined in its National Energy Strategy.

Masdar has developed a number of landmark wind projects across the world, including the 400MW Dumat Al Jandal wind farm, the largest in the Middle East and the first in Saudi Arabia, the 630MW London Array offshore wind project in the United Kingdom which powers half a million British homes and the 103.5MW UAE Wind Program, which utilizes innovative technology to capture low wind speeds at utility scale.

Masdar is aiming for a renewable energy portfolio capacity of 100GW by 2030, as well as supporting the target set out in The UAE Consensus to triple global renewables capacity by the end of this decade, and aims to be a leading producer of green hydrogen by the same year.

Masdar together with its partners Equinor and China Resources Power has received consent from the UK Government to extend the 402MW Dudgeon offshore wind project.

On April 17 2024, the UK Secretary of State for the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero, granted the development consent for Dudgeon Extension.

Masdar owns a 35% stake in Dudgeon and Dudgeon Extension. The Dudgeon Extension project has been selected as a Pathfinder project for coordinated offshore transmission development under the UK’s Governments Offshore Transmission Network Review and as such, the consent application for the Extension project includes an option to utilize an integrated transmission system.

The Dudgeon Extension project represents up to 30 offshore wind turbines and foundations. The consent enables Dudgeon Extension to now progress through the next stage of development. Upon on completion, the Extension project will provide crucial renewable energy power to approximately 440,000 UK homes, aiding the UK ‘s decarbonization goals.

Masdar, along with its partners Equinor and China Resources Power, will now continue the development of the extension towards Final Investment Decision.

Emerge, a joint venture between Masdar and EDF Group, has signed an agreement to install a 980kWp rooftop solar plant for Dubai Maritime City that will offset 780 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.

The project is part of a wider energy transition led by DP World, the parent company of Dubai Maritime City, to facilitate the widespread adoption of renewable energy and battery energy storage systems (BESS) within DP World’s global supply chain.

Situated on the roof of the staff accommodation building and consisting of more than 1,700 solar modules, the plant will be delivered by Emerge as a turnkey solution, including finance, design, procurement, construction, operations, and maintenance of the solar modules for 25 years.

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar (“Masdar”), the United Arab Emirates’ clean energy powerhouse, today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire a 50 percent stake in Terra-Gen Power Holdings II, LLC (“Terra-Gen”), one of the largest independent renewable energy power producers in the United States, from Energy Capital Partners (“ECP”). 

ECP, a leading investor across energy transition, electrification and decarbonization infrastructure assets, will fully exit its position in Terra-Gen in connection with the transaction. Igneo Infrastructure Partners (“Igneo”), a global infrastructure investment manager, will retain its existing 50 percent stake in the company. Igneo made its initial investment in Terra-Gen in December 2020.

Established in 2007, Terra-Gen is a leading independent provider of end-to-end renewable project development, financing and operating capabilities. Terra-Gen has a proven track record of developing, owning and operating assets across a large and diverse set of renewable technologies in the most attractive markets for renewables and storage in the U.S. Terra-Gen currently operates approximately 2.4 GW of wind and solar, and 5.1 GWh of energy storage facilities across 32 renewable power sites throughout the U.S., predominantly in California and Texas. This transaction will position Terra-Gen to continue building on the significant growth and transformation realized under ECP’s ownership and achieve accelerated long-term success as part of Masdar’s and Igneo’s portfolios.

Masdar’s 18-year history of funding, developing, owning and operating clean energy projects around the world will support Terra-Gen’s ambitions to grow its renewable capacity and portfolio in the U.S. One of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy companies, UAE-based Masdar first invested in the U.S. energy market in 2019. The UAE-Caribbean Renewable Energy Fund (UAE-CREF), announced that the hurricane-resistant power project developed by Masdar for Antigua and Barbuda to withstand even the fiercest winds, is now operational.

In the wake of Hurricane Irma, which destroyed 95 percent of Barbuda on September 6, 2017, and forced all 1,800 residents to be evacuated to Antigua, the climate resistant plant is designed to survive 265 km-per-hour winds and provide a safe, reliable, and sustainable supply of electrical power for the island.

The hybrid solar, batteries, and back-up diesel project is already helping to support the twin-island nation’s objective of meeting 86 percent of its electricity sources from renewable energy by 2030.

The Green Barbuda project was formally inaugurated at an event on the island of Barbuda by Hon. Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, H.E. Hazza Ahmed Al Kaabi, the UAE Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba, and Ambassador Brian Challenger, the Ministry of Energy of Antigua and Barbuda, accompanied by a delegation from local and state entities.

Masdar developed and implemented the Green Barbuda project as part of its work under UAE-CREF, the largest renewable energy investment of its type in the region. Fully financed by the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), the US$50 million UAE-CREF was launched at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2017 as a partnership between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), ADFD and Masdar. New Zealand, Antigua and Barbuda and the CARICOM Development Fund (CDF) also provided funding for the project.

In Antigua and Barbuda, renewable energy projects not only ensure a sustainable future but also address immediate needs, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals.”

The bespoke project combines a hybrid solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, featuring 720 kilowatts-peak (kWp) of solar PV panels, connected to a 863 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, and capable of fully meeting the island’s current daytime energy demand. The plant will enable Barbuda to reduce annual diesel fuel consumption by 406,000 liters and cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 1 million kg.

The UAE-CREF initiative intends to deploy renewable energy projects in 16 Caribbean countries in three cycles to reduce energy costs, increase energy access, and enhance climate resilience. Projects have already been successfully launched in the Bahamas, Barbados, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

The UAE Ministry of Defence and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, have signed a Partnership Agreement to develop multi-solar plants across Abu Dhabi.

Emerge, a joint venture between the UAE’s Masdar and France’s EDF Group, will provide a full turnkey solution for the projects, including finance, design, procurement, construction, operations, and maintenance for 25 years.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Major General Sheikh Ahmad Bin Tahnoon Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan, Deputy Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces, His Excellency Dr Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, COP28 President and Masdar Chairman, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, Chief Executive Officer of Masdar, Luc Koechlin, CEO Middle East of EDF Group, and Michel Abi Saab, General Manager of Emerge.

The agreement was signed at Masdar City in Abu Dhabi by Brigadier General Saeed Al Ketbi, Commander of the Military Works Command from the UAE Ministry of Defence and Abdulaziz Alobaidli, Chief Operating Officer of Masdar and Chairman of Emerge.

In December 2023, the Ministry of Defence launched the UAE Armed Forces' Climate Change Strategy on the sidelines of the COP28, the first of its kind in the region. Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy powerhouse, has completed its acquisition of a 49 percent shareholding in the 3 gigawatt (GW) Dogger Bank South (DBS) project – one of the world’s largest planned offshore wind farms. 

The planned £11 billion joint investment with RWE, a leading renewable energy company headquartered in Germany, is expected to provide a huge boost to the UK economy and demonstrates the UAE’s commitment to supporting net-zero goals in Britain and around the world. It builds on the £10 billion UAE-UK Sovereign Investment Partnership (UK-UAE SIP) to invest in technology, infrastructure and the energy transition.

Today’s announcement highlights the scale of Masdar’s long-standing support for global offshore wind projects. A decade ago, Masdar, RWE and partners launched the 630MW London Array wind farm, the world’s largest at the time. Masdar has also invested in the 30MW Hywind project – the world’s first floating offshore wind farm – and the 402MW Dudgeon offshore wind farm. Last year, Masdar agreed to co-invest in the 476MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, which will power 475,000 homes.

Located over 100 kilometers off the northeastern coast of England, the DBS offshore wind farm will be split across two sites, DBS East and DBS West, each with a capacity of 1.5 GW and spanning 500 square kilometers. The mega-facility is expected to generate enough electricity to power three million typical UK homes and will lead to the creation of 2,000 jobs during construction and more than 1,000 direct and indirect jobs during the operational phase.

Masdar and RWE signed an agreement to join forces on the DBS projects at COP28 in the UAE last December. With the closing of the transaction, Masdar is now a shareholder in both projects, while RWE retains a 51 percent stake. The companies will work together to develop and operate the wind farms.

Construction on the projects could start as early as the end of 2025, with the first 800MW of electricity planned to come online in 2029. The projects are expected to be fully commissioned by the end of 2031.

The next development milestone for the projects will be the submission of applications for Development Consent Orders, expected to be during the second quarter of 2024. If successful, the next steps would be to secure Contracts for Difference (CfD), followed by financing, construction and finally commissioning by 2031.

Masdar Arlington Energy, a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company PJSC – Masdar, has broken ground at the sites of two new battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in the UK.

The Royle Barn Road plant in Rochdale and Welkin Road plant in Stockport will have a combined capacity of 55MW and provide enough energy to power 25,700 homes.

The new BESS projects are being developed on previously industrialized sites, conforming to Masdar Arlington Energy’s strategy to house projects on land in need of redevelopment and regeneration.

Masdar Arlington Energy is pursuing an ambitious 3GWh pipeline of BESS projects in the UK. Today’s groundbreaking comes a year after Masdar  announced the  company’s commitment to invest £1 billion in BESS in the UK.

BESS provides a solution to the intermittency issues which affect renewable energy sources, storing excess electricity generated by solar plants and wind farms to be distributed during the periods when they are unable to provide power.
